Social Media and the Baby Boomers
When I saw this statement, it got me thinking about how ridiculouus some people’s perceptions are. Okay, I agree it was the case 10 years ago, maybe even 5 years ago, but certainly not today!
In fact during this covid pandemic, my guess is that for many Baby Boomers, becoming used to using social media platforms is the only way to keep in touch with family, especially grand children!
Personally, I never thought I would use platforms like Snapchat and TicToc, but if it’s where my granddaughters are, it’s where I want to be. I’m sure I’m not alone!
Facebook age & gender demographics
The breakdown of demographics by age include:
- 51% of 13–17 year olds use Facebook
- 76% of 18–24 year olds use Facebook
- 84% of 25–30 year olds use Facebook
- 79% of 30–49 year olds use Facebook
- 68% of 50–64 year olds use Facebook
- 46% of 65+ year olds use Facebook
It’s been found that even though 32% of Baby Boomers don’t post on social media, they are more than twice as likely to engage with branded content than social media users who are 28 years old or younger.
So where does that leave us small to medium sized businesses? Yes, you’ve got it, you need to be really focusing on getting the attention of the baby-boomers on the social media platforms like Facebook, You Tube and Instagram. Remember LinkedIn too. This platform has many baby-boomer professionals ready to use your services!
MY TIP: Get into the minds of your baby boomer customers, find out how they think, how they buy and then really start to build a rapport with them!
